Easy Halloween School Lunch

Sometimes it can be a thrill for kids to jazz up ordinary things in interesting ways....like a school lunch to celebrate Halloween as a fun little surprise. This lunch is very simple to create as you don't have to bake anything special and only takes a little extra time. However, I am sure that it would make any child smile!
This cute Halloween lunch consists of:
- a clementine with a funny face drawn with a Sharpie.
-an 'eyeball' sandwiches made with olive slices for eyes.
- a wormy apple made with a real apple and a gummy worm (cut the apple in half and then make a small hole to put the worm through.)
-Halloween pretzel hugs, or any little treat will also work.
-A Franken-juice box
And then our pretty little Halloween lunch is packed in the Mackenzie Lunch Bag by Pottery Barn Kids. We have had a chance to use this bag for over a month now and it is an awesome bag! Not only is it made of a rugged, water-resistant polyester, but the sturdy stitching for the handle makes it great for the rough and tumble it takes from a tween boy.
As a mom, I also love the molded interior because it is so easy to wipe clean when needed so those messy pudding cups or sticky fruit juice stains take mere seconds to clean with a wet cloth.
And trust me, at the end of the day, I don't want to spend a lot of time wiping out lunch boxes.
And this lunch bag can also fit the Hot/Cold Food Storage Container, or the Spencer Food Storage container, as well as being personalized with a name.
And, of course, it holds everything for this special lunch perfectly!
The Franken-berry juice box is easy to make with some googly eyes, black and green construction paper, a sharpie and some scissors.
Just cover the juice box in green construction paper.
Use some zig-zag scissors to cut some hair.
Glue the hair on the green box, add some googly eyes, draw a smile with a black sharpie and that's it!
And after the fun of creating is done, everything packs nicely into the Pottery Barn Kids Mackenzie Lunch Bag, and I know that the lunch will arrive safely at school  with the molded interior protecting it from accidental squishing!
I hope you feel inspired to have a little fun in creating something special for a Halloween school lunch!
Wishing you an inspired day!

Disclosure: Pottery Barn Kids provided me with this lunch bag for the purposes of review. However, all opinions are mine as I share with you our experiences in using this lunch bag.

4 Tips To Avoid Homework Hassles

With the start of a new school year and new routines, there is one routine that is all too familiar in every house with school aged kids...and that is the homework routine. I have to say that we are very lucky in our house because  homework is done without any hassle on most days. However, this does not mean that we have not had the occasional homework battle.

This is my daughter's 13th year of school and my son's 9th year of school. Over the years, we have learned a few things about encouraging our kids to complete their homework with minimal nagging from Mom or Dad. And here is what I have found works for us:

1. Don't Overschedule Your Child.
Extra-curricular activities are great for providing children with exercise, confidence and fun. However, if your child doesn't arrive home until later in the evening to a late supper, homework can easily get pushed to the bottom of the list. Creating a balanced schedule where extra-curricular fun is balanced with homework, free-time and time for sleeping works best. A child who is not over-tired from their day is much more willing to do homework.

2. Set Up A Comfortable Homework Space.
A comfortable homework space based on the child's age and personality is a important part of a child's desire to do homework. I have one child who prefers to do homework in the quiet of her own bedroom.  However, my son, for many years, preferred to do his homework at the kitchen table while I cooked supper. So we set up a caddy filled with homework supplies that he could easily get out while doing homework and then put away in the closet when he was done.
And for a time, he liked to do his homework in our family room at this table.
And now that he has started junior high school, he likes to do his homework in his room, so we set him up this new study space in his room.
The key here is flexibility in providing a study space that works for your child!

3. Ask Your Child To Set A Time For Homework.
We have found that allowing our kids' to take responsibility for their schedules has made a huge impact on lessening conflict surrounding homework. We simply ask them what part of their day that they plan to do homework and then we expect them to stick to 'the plan'. This allows them greater control over their day and gives them practice at time management. I have one child who almost always sets his time for homework right after school because he wants to get it done and move on to fun things.
My daughter likes to unwind with some tv after school and she prefers to do her homework after dinner in the evening.
It really doesn't matter to us when the homework is done, as long as a quality job is done!

4. Know When To Get Help!
With a new school year already here, don't wait until poor test scores arrive home! If you know a child is overwhelmed, frustrated or needs help in a subject area or help with homework, get help now!
And as a parent, I know that help from Mom or Dad is often not the answer and can increase frustrations on both sides!
Math is a subject in our house that has required each child to spend extra time on memorization and review. And with a daughter in her senior year, we know that hiring a math tutor is a very costly venture with fees starting at $50 an hour. However, there are other programs available to help your child become successful in their school work. If you have a child who is overwhelmed, frustrated or not challenged by school, this may be the program you are looking for!

3 Peanut Free School Lunch Ideas

{To celebrate Back To School  as part of a sponsored post for Collective Bias, I made these peanut free lunches featuring peanut free products from Presidents Choice.  #cbias}

With Back to School season upon us, and the first day of school not far away, it's time to stock up on all those lunch-making items for creating school lunches which are both nutritious and appetizing for kids.
For years, my kids attended an elementary school that was 'peanut free' and although my kids don't have food allergies, I was always very aware that the child eating lunch next to my child might have a peanut allergy, so I made sure that our lunches were 'peanut free' for the safety of every child.
Packing 'peanut free' lunches is not hard at all. The job can be easy if you are armed with some knowledge, use lots of fresh fruit & vegetables and find peanut free snack choices.
A line of products that I have come to rely on is the President's Choice  peanut free line of snacks, which are easy to find with a peanut free logo right on the package. They are so many delicious choices that I could pack a lunch every day of the week with a different, tasty snack item each time.
If you are new to packing lunches for school, here are some ideas meant to inspire you, and since both of my children are not fond of sandwiches...these lunches contain a variety of things minus sandwiches.
Let's have a look at some lunch ideas that I pack for my children which are both delicious and peanut free.
Lunch #1.
The Pickles, Ham and Cheese Lover's Lunch.
 It contains:
Pickle, ham and cheese mini-kabobs, baby carrots and snap peas, a cheese round, President's Choice White Cheddar & Rosemary Flavoured Mini-Crackers {Peanut Free}and a President's Choice Dipped & Chewy Chocolate Chip Granola bar {Peanut Free} for dessert.
Lunch #2
The Strawberry Lover's Lunch.
I have a child who loves strawberries and would eat them every day of the week if they were in the house. This is one of her favourite lunches!
It contains:
Sliced Strawberries. President's Choice Cheddar Little Penguin Snack Crackers {Peanut Free} and cheese, carrots, and a President's Choice Little Penguin Brownie {Peanut Free}
Lunch #3
Little Bit of Everything Lunch.
It contains: Ham, Cheese & Pickle Mini-Kabobs, President's Choice White Cheddar & Rosemary Flavoured Mini Crackers{Peanut Free}, fresh cherries, carrots sticks, cucumber rounds and President's Choice 'Eat The Middle First' Cookies {Peanut Free}.
And when packing lunches, don't forget to include single servings of juice, milk or water. Here are two of my kids' favourite drinks for their lunches...my son loves juice boxes, while my daughter loves coconut water to take to school.
Packing school lunches every day can tend to be a bit of a challenge for busy moms sometimes, but with a bit of planning, and some delicious peanut free snacks on hand, the job becomes much easier for both moms to make and kids to eat!

Back To School Breakfast Bash

Even though we are celebrating the start of school with a special 'Breakfast Bash', I have to admit that I am feeling a little sad for the start of school this year. Just like mommies feel sad when they have a little one start school for the first time, I am feeling sad because my oldest is starting school for the last time...it's her senior year.
The years have flown by faster than I could have ever imagined and I cannot believe we are here already.
But I guess it's all the more reason to have some fun...because we made it!
And fun we will have with some cute owls, take home cookies in paper bags, pancakes, bacon, fruit salad and mini cinnamon buns.
I just could not resist these adorable little owls on mini-clothespins I found. So perfect for a back to bash, don't you think?
Inside these paper bags are cookies to take to school, along with 2 new pencils.
I created a centerpiece with my favourite fall flower...sunflowers.
And I made super-duper fluffy mini-pancakes with bacon.
Mini-cinnamon buns from the local grocery store round out the menu for baked treats.
And a deliciously festive fruit salad completes the meal.
A special day like the first day of your last year of school deserves a wonderful breakfast!
And even if you don't have time to make anything special, some store-bought muffins with a fruit tray would be just as special! It's all really just about marking the occasion with people you love.
Do you have any special traditions to celebrate the beginning of a new school year?
Please share in the comments...I would love to hear about them!

And if need some help in packing school lunches, I have some helpful posts on packing school lunches here and here.

A Great Grab & Go Breakfast for Teens

Has anyone else noticed the irony of parenting and sleep issues? When our kids were babies, we spent a lot of time trying to get them to go to sleep. Then when they were toddlers, we spent a lot of time trying to get them to go to bed and stay in bed. And then along come the teenage years, and now we spend a lot of time trying to get them to wake up and get up!
And getting up late means no time for a sit-down breakfast!
I have 2 teens in my house, and school mornings are more like the Olympics of trying to get them up for school. I open bedroom doors, make threats of making people walk to school, play loud music, but often I see a child running out the door at the very last minute possible. Sleep is just too important at this age that the morning routine of eating breakfast before school just doesn't happen anymore.
Which is why I am so glad that there is the option of YOP...the drinkable yogurt.
My son loves them. I mean 'drink them all day' LOVES them.
He has a very busy schedule with hockey almost every day of the week, so getting something fast & nutritious into him for breakfast is important.
For this reason, I like having the option of YOPS in our fridge all the time, and I often pack 1 or 2 in his lunch.

YOPS are available in a lot of delicious flavours and provide a great source of energy...and they take about 2 seconds to drink...at least in my house that is all it takes!
YOPS make a great grab & go breakfast for busy, but sleepy, teens and are a terrific option to have on hand whether it be breakfast, snack or anytime.

Fun Ideas for Healthy Lunches & A Giveaway!

I don't know about you, but after the fun of Christmas & New Year's Eve has passed, I am not only happy to return to our normal routine, but I am also glad to get back to our usual healthy eating habits after indulging in all the holiday goodies. Yesterday was the first day back to school after Christmas break for my children, so I spent some time on Sunday cutting up fruit and vegetables for creating healthy lunches this week. If you have read my previous posts on packing lunches for kids~5 Easy Steps to Packing School Lunches & School Lunches Made Easy~you know that I like to include fresh fruit & veggies in my children's lunches everyday!

Recently I was contact by the folks at SNACK PACK and invited to take part in their "NO TRADESIES" Blog Tour and to share ideas on creating healthy lunches for kids that they will love.  I know that my children love fresh fruits and veggies in their lunches...the taste, the freshness and the crispness are all very appealing.

The folks at SNACK PACK sent me these fabulous containers{below} to use for packing lunches. I LOVE these containers {I had some like this about 5 years ago, but they wore out, and I haven't been able to find any since.} because they allow you to create a 'dinner plate' effect, where food can be eaten in whatever order, which  is more appealing to children. They can munch on  a sandwich, while also popping in a veggie and a piece of fruit.

Here are some tips for making healthy, "NO TRADESIES" yummy lunches for children:
  • Encourage kids to eat their fruit by adding a Snack Pack to 'mix it up' and turn fruit into a tasty, dip-able adventure. Try apple slices with a Toffee Caramel pudding, or Chocolate with strawberries and grapes...reminiscent of a fondue party!
  • Sandwich Shapes. Make eating the regular sandwich a bit more fun. Break out the cookie cutter to create fun shapes and use different types of bread to make things interesting.
  • Kebab it! My kids love mini-kebabs on toothpicks. Different fruits on toothpicks, or meat & cheese, or veggies...it doesn't matter....kids just seem to like it better this way!
I used these containers to prepare 2 healthy lunches~
The first lunch included a simple jelly sandwich on whole bread cut with some fun Lunch Punch Sandwich Cutters, cucumbers and red peppers, along with strawberry & pound cake mini-kabobs for dipping in the Lemon Meringue Snack Pack.
My son said it was "delicious!"
{I had never tried the lemon meringue dessert Snack Pack before and it was SO good. I am addicted!}

The second lunch was similar~a peanut butter & jelly sandwich cut with Lunch Punch Sandwich Cutters, cucumbers, red peppers and carrots, with grapes and strawberries to dip into the Ice Cream Sandwich Snack Pack. My son was intrigued with the Lunch Punch Cutters, so I let him cut the sandwich. I love help in the kitchen!
This would also make a fabulous after school snack! Fresh fruit & chocolate pudding...sign me up!
To be honest, I have not purchased pudding cups in a LONG time. Since I can' t remember the last time!
When my son first tried them, he ate 3 Ice Cream Sandwich Snack Packs, with a whole lot of grapes and strawberries. Apparently, he was really hungry AND ready to try something different with fruit, and the great taste sold him!

His hands down favourite was the Ice Cream Sandwich Snack Pack. Mine was the Lemon Meringue!

Classic Snack Pack flavours include: Chocolate, Chocolate Fudge, Vanilla, Butterscotch, Vanilla & Tapioca, Fat Free Chocolate & Fat Free Vanilla. {Fat free flavours are 90 calories per serving or less!} Snack Pack also comes in exciting dessert flavours that include: Ice Cream Sandwich, Lemon Meringue Pie, Banana Cream Pie, Chocolate Caramel, & Toffee Caramel.

And here's some important nutritional  info about SNACK PACKS:
  • Snack Pack Pudding is made with skim milk.
  • Snack Pack Juicy Gels are made ith real fruit juice.
  • All Snack Pack puddings have no preservatives or trans-fats.

School Lunches Made Easy...

Who likes the chore of packing school lunches?
I do...when I have a strategy and some super cool & fun products to use!
If you have kids just entering the school system for the first time and are packing lunches for your littles for the very first school year, it may seem fun....at first.
But then it becomes gradually....not so fun.
I have been packing school lunches since the fall of 2001 when my daughter started full-day school at age 5.
Over the years, I have really learned how to get the chore done as quickly and as easily as possible, and I really want to share with you how I easily pack my kids nutritious and tasty lunches.
And I am also here to tell you that although those super cute animal sandwiches being pinned on Pinterest by everybody are lovely...I don't know any mom who creates them.
Last August, I wrote a post about school lunches, "5 Easy Steps To Packing School Lunches"...which is still one of my most popular posts. This time around, I am going to share just a little more updated information now that I have a daughter in high school. But I still stick to 5 easy steps...which are:

1. Start with a main course.
It can be a sandwich, salad or soup. If you are making sandwiches, remember to switch up the breads every so often to relieve the boredom of the same thing over and over again!
A main course can also be a salad.. If packing a salad, remember to pack the salad dressing separately so the salad doesn't get soggy. My daughter's favourite lunch for years was a pasta salad.

A main course can also be soup. Both my kids love hot soup in the winter. I like using stainless steel thermoses over plastic or glass since they are sturdy and don't leach chemicals.

2. Add some vegetables.
Adding veggies into your child's lunch is a great way to make sure they are getting their required daily servings of fruits & veggies. My kids like their veggies with dip, so I add a little of their fav ranch dressing to the bottom of the container for a 'veggies & dip' snack.

3. Add Fruit.
Fruit cups. Fruit salad or fresh fruit. Apples. Watermelon wedges. It all counts. Just add fruit to your child's lunch to build towards those daily servings fruit & vegetables. And they are learning healthy snacking habits to serve them throughout life.
And if the thought of cutting up fruit for lunches is a little overwhelming to an already crazy busy schedule, use one of these great helpers from the grocery store!
One new thing that I have discovered this year is these amazing LunchBot  containers. Love them.
They are stainless steel and extremely sturdy, and come in different configurations.
I also love that they are a great size...not too big and perfect for serving sizes for elementary school kids.
I also find that the lids are not too tight for little kids to open.
This is the quad LunchBot, which has 4 different sections.
I love it because it holds the main course and fruit & veggies all in one container!
LunchBots also come in a 'tri' combination with 3 sections.
Here I tucked a small sandwich into the long section and added fruits and veggies to the other sections.
Brilliant, right?

4. Add a little treat.
After adding a main course and fruits and veggies, I always add a small treat to my kids' lunches. It can be homemade cookies, granola bars, a muffin or something that I know they like. I give my kids complete control over when they choose to eat their treat. My son always eats his treat at recess before lunch! {If you would like to see the recipe for our family's favourite chocolate chip cookie, go here.}

5. Add a drink and a napkin.
This is the last step in my "5 Easy Steps" to packing school lunches.

*Now here is some other advice I would like to add.*
  •  Having lots of little containers really helps when it comes to packing lunches. They hold everything from salad dressings to fruit and veggies.
  • Having fruits and veggies washed & prepped in little containers ready to go into lunches in the morning makes lunch- packing a breeze. You are  essentially making your own pre-packaged foods for lunches that are healthy and without added salt, sugar, fat or preservatives. This system works extremely well when lunches are prepped on Sunday and then throughout the week, you are just adding prepared foods in containers to lunches.
  • Have a  container/bin of some kind in the fridge to store lunch items all in one place.
  •  I love these Lunchskins. They replace the need for plastic baggies and are dishwasher safe and good for 1000 uses, which saves you money, as well as being great for the environment. They are made of high quality fabric, toxin free and  come in a couple of sizes...sandwich, snack and sub size.
{Photo Source below: Lunchskins}

  • This year, I also found this brilliant lunch bag, which has 2 different insulated compartments...so one compartment can be a 'cold' side, and the other can be a 'warm' side. They are made by a Canadian company called "BalancedDayBags".{You can order them here.} It's the perfect bag for my son in elementary school.
Each side has a number on it's cover. I used the 'One' for the warm side with soup in a thermos and bread.
The number 'Two' side I used the for the cold side, with the LunchBot and an ice pack from the dollar store.I love the practicality of this design and it would be great for a school day with 2 breaks where you could let your child know which food is for Break 1 and which is for Break 2.
  •  Another thing  I learned this year is that my high school student is not interested in taking containers of lunch items to school any more. She just wants to take packages she can throw away. And although this is not good for the environment, I do want her to eat throughout the day, so I have made lots of 'GRAB & GO' items for her. {She does not like cafeteria food or fast food.}. I keep baggies of  fresh fruits and veggies  and single servings of Greek yogurt, guacamole and dips on hand for her, as well as bags of pita wedges and crackers, etc. in the pantry. Hopefully, when she gets a little older and out of high school, she will go back to using environmentally-friendly products that her mama has uses!
And that, my friends, is how I have made packing school lunches easy!
I hope you find some of these ideas useful for your family!

What strategies do you use to help make packing school lunches easy for your family?

{**Thank you so much  to the lovely folks at Greenmuch for providing me with Lunchbots, Lunchskins, and BalancedDayBags to test and try! All opinions are my own and I love these products.**}
