I grew up within a small family-owned business in rural Nova Scotia and that`s how my father put food on our table. My family owned a lumber mill where logs were made into lumber for sale to the construction industry for building communities, towns and cities. Growing up in Nova Scotia, I was always very aware of how lucky we were to have natural resources available to us to support ourselves in the forestry, fishery and agricultural industries.

Fast forward to my life now-I live in Alberta with my husband and children and my husband works in the oil & gas industry to provide for our family.  I am so very grateful to live in Canada where we have such a vast country rich with natural resources such as the oil and gas that allows us to provide heat for our homes, gas for our cars, and many, many other things....all while providing employment that supports thousands of families across the country...my family being one of them.
{My family shortly after we moved to Alberta in 2005.}

Earlier this year, a market research study suggested that a large portion of the Canadian population didn`t know or care much about the Oil Sands Industry. This is a bit concerning since Canada is the 6th largest producer of crude oil in the world and contains the 3rd largest oil reserves with 97% in the oil sands located in the Athabasca, Peace River and Cold Lake areas of Alberta and Saskatchewan. These 3 areas contain about 168 billion barrels of oil with the potential of over 100 years of production, which could create over 800,000 jobs in the next 25 years alone. This is an important part of the Canadian economy.

With so many Canadian relying on this industry to provide the things that we use in our everyday lives, such as gas to drive our cars, it is vital for Canadians to have an awareness of the importance of this industry. Petroleum is part of our everyday lives and Canadians rely on many, many things that are made possible by this industry such as the gas that fuels the two cars that most families own, planes that we ride for vacations and visits to family members in other parts of the country, boats for fishing, trailers for camping season, not to mention all the other products made from crude oil including heat, clothing, cosmetics, building materials and plastics.

Our lives as Canadians without this industry would look very, very different than it does today. Imagine trying to get to work in our Canadian winters without gas in a nice warm car to drive, or that the cost was $300 to fill up our cars. We are so lucky to live in Canada...with fresh water to drink, trees for lumber, fish for our tables. rich soil for crops and livestock, and crude oil that makes it possible for us to heat our homes and drive our cars at an affordable cost. Many, many countries in the world do not enjoy the  natural resources that we have or the quality of  life. Without this important industry, we would not be enjoying many of the comforts that we take for granted. I really, really encourage you to take a little time to learn more about a Canadian industry that makes it possible for all of us to enjoy the life in Canada that we do.
