Canada Day Party Guide- Ideas & Recipes

We love Canada Day at our house. We usually have a BBQ with friends and then enjoy the fireworks display put on by our city. When I was in my early twenties, I lived in Ottawa for a summer and had such a fun time celebrating Canada Day...the streets were filled with revelers and happy smiles, and I have always remembered that feeling of how lucky we are to live in this amazing country.

Canada Day Wind Sock Craft

Happy First Day of Summer!
Canada Day will soon be here, and I created this craft which is a super FUN project  for kids...and the best part for Moms? This craft should take up most of an afternoon and with kids finishing school soon, that is a GOOD thing!
This crafts starts with a recycled can and lots of bits and bobbles that you may even have around the house
Let's get started, shall we?

Here are the supplies you will need:

Supplies:

 -recycled can, with 2 holes, one on the top of each side for hanging with twine.

-white spray paint or craft paint

-red maple leaf cutouts {see below}

-red beads or red ribbon for trimming top & bottom of can

-ribbon or streamers or yarn in red & white, cut into long lengths about 12-15 inches long

-white school glue, or hot glue

Directions:

1. Paint cans white with spray paint or craft paint. Let dry.

2. Print the red maple leafs on the sheet below and cut out. Glue the maple leafs to the can however you wish. Kids can have fun here!

3. Glue beads or ribbon around the top and bottom of the can as shown.

4. Turn the can upside down, and glue ribbon, streamers or yarn lengths to the inside of the can as shown.

5. Attach twine to the can as shown for hanging the can.

Now the kids can hang their completed craft! 

This is such a fun decoration for Canada Day, or the Fourth of July, or just for fun!

I think it looks so pretty hanging in a tree, don't you think? I love the ribbons!

Canada Day Cupcakes

Despite a week of rain, I have been working on some Canada Day projects to share with you! We love celebrating Canada Day with a BBQ with friends and then catching the fireworks in our city...it is such an awesome way to kick off the summer!

And it just wouldn't be Canada Day without mini-cupcakes!

And you know what? It doesn't matter if you make or buy cupcakes, because when you have these adorable little Canada Day Cupcake Toppers, you won't need to stress about impressing on Canada Day! You can simply add these darling flags to cupcakes, sandwiches or finger foods. If you are looking for an easy recipe for chocolate mini cupcakes, you could try my favourite recipe:

Chocolate Mini Cupcakes

In mixing bowl, measure:
1 & 1/3 cups white flour
1 cup sugar
6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt 
1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Stir the dry ingredients. Then add:
1 cup water.
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Mix until combined. Grease mini muffin tins. Fill tins about 2/3 full. Bake in 350 oven for about 10 -12 minutes. Frost as desired and add cupcake toppers!

Happy Canada Day & 4th of July...

Here in Canada, we are getting ready for the best long weekend of the Summer.....Canada Day Weekend.

Canada Day falls on Sunday this year, so most people also have Monday off, which makes for a great weekend of fun.

I did my running around & organizing today for a Canada Day BBQ we are hosting at our house on Sunday for some friends.

I get this habit from my Mother...who always plans for parties DAYS in advance!
We like to entertain in a very casual way...with a buffet table laid out, so people are free to eat & relax where they wish!

This morning while I was out,  I grabbed some things to make a bowl for the kids....some glow sticks, tattoos, a frisbee and a ball.

We will likely play BOCCE ball on the lawn as well because everyone can play this game.

And then we will enjoy the fireworks put on by our City later in the evening.

 I also found these great red baskets for the kids' food, along with red cups and old-fashioned striped candy sticks.

The baskets, which will be lined with waxed paper, are easy for kids to handle.

 For the adults, I have glass plates and mason jars ready to go.

 I  wrapped the silverware in red gingham napkins{found at The Bay} and tied with twine
I LOVE red gingham!

 I found the grocery store full of things to make a sweet plate if you don't have time or desire to make anything.

I bought sugar cookies and chocolate glazed donuts.

I added maple leaf sprinkles to the donuts and placed them in cupcake liners.

I also plan to make strawberry shortcake, but not everyone likes strawberry shortcake, so I like to offer some other things as well.

 With these things out of the way, I just have to organize the main course and some salads for Sunday.

Happy Canada Day weekend to all of my Canadian Friends!!
