Even though I am 45 years old, I have had my heart checked by ultrasound and echo cardiogram several times over the years. I have had special tests done at ages 20, 28 and 34 and I am getting ready for another full heart check up. You see, when I was around age 20, it was discovered that our family carried a gene that could cause the heart to become enlarged, making it hard for the heart to pump blood through out its chambers and keep a normal heart rhythm. This genetic heart defect was found to affect my grandmother, my dad and my uncle, with my dad having the worst case in the family. So this has meant years of various treatments and drug therapies for my Dad, which has made our family very aware of heart rhythms and heart health. Because my Dad is a direct relative, my chances of having this defect lie around 50%. But with testing every 6-8 years, I have been lucky so far. However, heart health is that I care about and think everyone should be aware of.
